BALLARAT’S Islamic community will open the doors to the local mosque as part of Victorian Open Mosque Day tomorrow.
The Islamic Council of Victoria initiative is a celebration of dialogue, mutual respect and cultural understanding.
Event organiser Aasiya Furniturewale encouraged community members from all backgrounds to attend the event and said she hopes it will unite people, forge friendships and clear up misconceptions.
“Open Mosque Day is all about open hearts and open minds, and it’s a chance to welcome everyone, share our faith and build understanding,” she said.
“We want to invite the community to experience the beauty of Islam, ask questions, if there’s any misunderstandings, and connect with us in the spirit of friendship.”
The free day will include presentations, cultural food and activities.
Islamic Society of Ballarat president Darren James said it will provide an opportunity to make connections.
“It’s a sense of companionship with regard to neighbourhood,” he said.

“It’s getting to know what the Islamic Society of Ballarat is about.”
The Islamic Society of Ballarat has occupied the Canadian site since its opening in 2016. It is one of seven mosques in regional Victoria.
Mr James said many people are unaware that Ballarat has a mosque.
“A lot of people comment that they didn’t even know there was a mosque in Ballarat,” he said.
“Being tucked away in an industrial area, we’re sort of a little built out of sight, out of mind.”
The open day will take place Saturday 15 February.
