Platform offered for next gen artists

BUDDING artists between the ages of twelve and twenty-five are being invited to register for an upcoming creative showcase.

The Y Ballarat are seeking young people to present their work in the upcoming annual Youth Art Exhibition which will be held in June at Barkly Square.

“The Y believes in the power of inspired young people and an art exhibition like this is a platform to do that, while celebrating their achievements,” said engage services youth officer Lily Chancey.

“Last year, the exhibition grew massively and it had its own youth curator. It had its first sculptures, and over 80 works, many of which sold.

“I’d encourage young people to register because it’s a great way to be a part of the community, especially as there’s not many spaces in Ballarat for young people to display their artwork.

“It’s also an opportunity to make connections with other young artists, and for them to feel proud of themselves. Helping them to realise that sense of achievement really aligns with The Y’s values.”

Formerly held during Victorian Youth Week, the exhibition first took place in 2021 in partnership with BGT Jobs and Training and Ballarat Community Health.

“During COVID, youth were telling staff about the art they were creating at home, but there were reduced opportunities for them to share it, so the exhibition stemmed from that,” Ms Chancey said.

Registrations are now open via bit.ly/42Wybg4, and all styles and mediums are welcome if they’re portable and ready to hang, or are easy to display as 3D pieces.

A launch evening will be held on Friday, 23 June and the pieces will be displayed for a month. Artists may sell their artwork, and awards will be presented on opening night.
