Poppy campaign in full bloom

RSL’s Poppy Appeal is synonymous with Remembrance Day and this year is no different with members, volunteers and school students out across the district selling the distinctive icons.

Ballarat RSL Senior Vice-President, Sandy McCann, said that the funds raised from selling poppies goes into looking after veterans.

“That money goes toward welfare,” he said. “It’s shared between us and state branch. It all comes in and it all goes back to those that have served and is some cases those that are still serving.”

The history of the poppy as a commemoration activity stretches all the way back to World War One.

“The Poppy Appeal itself goes back to Flanders when it was set up as part and parcel of looking after those that came back,” Mr McCann said.

“It’s our way of recognising all who have served, including present day. As it says, Lest We Forget.”

One of those serving our nation is Army Captain Luke Quinn currently based in at the Ballarat headquartered 8th/7th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment.

He said that the RSL, and activities funded by Poppy Appeal, played a key role in helping current and past service personnel.

“The welfare and support of all members of the community is important,” he said. “Sometimes members that serve don’t go to the right places to get the help they need. I think it’s important that organisations like the RSL raise awareness so others can get the support they require.”

Captain Quinn also said that 11 November was still a significant day on the calendar.

“Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, is important to remember those particularly in World War One and the austere conditions they went through,” he said.
