THE Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre is introducing a new program to teach children survival skills in open water.

The Inland Water Safety Program is open to children aged six to 14 and aims to increase their awareness of risks in unpredictable water environments.

Since 1 December last year, 50 people have drowned in Australia – three more than the five-year average for this time of year.

Ballarat mayor Tracey Hargreaves said the program addresses an important community need.

“By teaching children how to respond to the challenges of unpredictable inland water, we can reduce the risk of drowning and foster confidence and awareness,” she said.

“Water safety is a life skill that every child should have access to.

“We’re thrilled to offer this program to the community and make a meaningful contribution to preventing future tragedies.”

The program runs for three days, beginning on Monday 20 January.

The first session will be held at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre and the next two at Lake Wendouree.

Participation cost is $75, which includes a one-hour session each day and a rash vest that can be kept.

Registrations to participate in the program can be completed on the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre website.
