THE Ballarat Dog Obedience Club is back in operation at Victoria Park, educating owners and socialising dogs.

Providing ethical, fun and respectful dog training with positive reinforcement, the Club works to support people in becoming the best owners and trainers possible.

Obedience coordinator Carol Hodges said the Club is about “training the handler, not the dog,” and is an accessible group for people of all abilities.

A responsible dog ownership program will run this month, designed for those seeking guidance surrounding how to train a newly acquired dog, and best ownership practice.

“We teach people about socialisation and respect of other dogs, and that sometimes dog parks are not the best place for dogs,” she said.

“We also show them how to handle their dogs’ feet, ears, mouth, eyes and tail. It’s all about education, and to let them know by-laws.”

The course will be shortened to four weeks, and run for an hour each Wednesday at 6.30pm, from 4 November to 25 November, cost $25, and bookings can be made through Mrs Hodges on 0418 633 330. Places are limited.

Meanwhile, a night for new and prospective members will be held at the Military Drive clubrooms on Wednesday, 11 November at 7pm.

This event will provide more information about regular activities, younger and older puppy classes, varying levels of dog classes, flyball, agility, tracking, obedience, tricks and RallyO.

Those interested can call Lisa Staszek on 0432 597 754.

Instructors are all volunteers, and the Club welcomes all ages and breeds. They do not use retractable leads or harnesses.

Anyone visiting will have their details recorded for contact tracing, wear a mask and sanitise.
