Racing in the ranges
AUTUMN country racing will be back at Avoca Shire Turf club later this month.
On Saturday, 23 March, a fresh and exciting program of racing will run against the backdrop of the picturesque Pyrenees ranges, surrounded by world-class wineries.
Racegoers are encouraged to swap their fascinators for hats, or suits for shorts, and come along to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.
On course, there’s plenty of entertainment and kids’ activities organised, alongside an opportunity to compete in a Fashions on the Field event inspired by Autumnal tones and textures.
Categories for competing fashionistas include couple of the day, men’s and women’s regional racegoer and relaxed racegoer, and crowd favourite. ASTC is donating $1,000 as prize money across the categories.
Turf Club president, Barry Slater said the club is looking forward to beginning a new era in Autumn. “While the Anzac Day Races will always remain a special part of our Club’s history…it also came with its challenges, particularly when it fell on a week day,” he said.
“We are very excited to launch a new look race day to our members, patrons, and sponsors.” Visitors are encouraged to embrace the region and plan a full Pyrenees weekend, attending the races on Saturday and Avoca’s Riverside Market or wineries on Sunday.
Gates open from 11am. Admission starts at $15 for adults, and for $15 per night, racecourse camping is available.
There are hospitality, food and beverage packages available to book online. Free buses will travel up to Avoca from Ballarat, but tickets are limited.
