BALLARAT’S manufacturing sector has been boosted by the State Government’s Regional Jobs Fund, with one hundred and sixty roles created.

Locally owned and operated company Plinius Engineering and Wrought Iron can take on at least 16 new workers, while a minimum of 150 new jobs have been made at Alstom Ballarat where parts of 25 X-Trapolis 2.0 trains are being manufactured.

Plinius’ director Wayne Squire said full-time permanent roles in varying areas of the factory have been created recently with some positions still available, while many have already been filled.

“We have fitting, welding, fabrication, painting, glassing, plumbing and electrical roles. We cover most of the scope of trades,” he said.

Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas and Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle met Plinius Engineering director Wayne Squire to check out the facility.

“All the roles need specific training, which is provided. Some roles are for experienced people, and others are for non-experienced. So far, we’ve filled 12 roles.

“This industry gives workers room to grow. When they become skilled in a trade, it’s like a blank canvas; they can make of it what they want, whether they travel, or one day own their own business.”

Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle said the Regional Jobs Fund is keeping manufacturing at the heart of industrial Ballarat.

“It’s fantastic to see long-standing and successful businesses like Plinius Engineering invest in the future of skilled manufacturing jobs in the region,” she said.

“We’ll be a manufacturing town for many, many years to come.”

Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas said the new employment opportunities are encouraging the region’s economic recovery.

“Plinius Engineering is a great example of a Victorian business that is leading the way to create highly skilled local jobs by backing its product and expanding its operations,” she said.
