Remembering Eureka 170 years on
THE one-hundred-and-seventieth anniversary of the Eureka Stockade was marked on Tuesday morning, 3 December.
Eureka descendants, community leaders and local residents gathered at the Eureka Stockade Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony to remember the diggers and soldiers who died on the site defending their rights or doing their duty in 1854.
A ceremony commemorating the miners who gave their lives and the soldiers who fell in the line of duty during the battle followed at the Old Ballarat Cemetery. There was a bagpipe procession to the graves, the names of those killed were read, and flags were raised at each site.
