ROKEWOOD Golf Club will host its eighty-fifth Annual Tournament over three days next week.

The event will tee off with a four-ball best-ball Stableford on Friday, 12 May, before stroke play on Saturday, 13 May, and two-person Ambrose action on Sunday, 14 May.

Secretary Daniel Mason said it’s important the weekend can attract as many golfers as possible to come out and have a swing.

“We’ve got new people in new roles at the club, so the tournament won’t necessarily make or break us, but show us what we need to improve on as a new committee,” he said.

“We’d like to see some familiar faces come out and play, but also new people. We’ve extended it to the Sunday, so we hope those who might play sport on a Saturday will be able to come down on Sunday.

“We want to keep the tournament going, and see it get it to 100 years.”

Mr Mason said there has been a boost in interest in the club as it moves into a new era of management.

Member numbers have grown since a special meeting about the organisation’s viability in March, including quite a few newcomers to the sport.

“The club was on the brink of folding at the time, owing to a decline in volunteers, members and active players, so a few of us have stepped up to make it profitable,” he said.

“With a rally from the community, there is now a new-look committee under the ongoing leadership of president Ross Hadler.”

There will be an 11am shotgun start for each day of play, and a barbecue from 10am each morning.

Entry is $30 per team each day, including mixed teams. There are A and B handicap and scratch divisions on the Saturday.
