FOOTBALL and netball clubs across regional Victoria can apply for grants from the State Government to improve the conditions of their facilities and enhance the safety of players, officials and spectators.

Clubs can access up to 50 per cent of the total cost of their safety initiatives and Minister for Workplace Safety Ingrid Stitt said the grants will ensure clubs retain their important status in regional areas.

“Country footy and netball teams are the lifeblood of regional communities, but you can’t make the most out of a season if you’re injured or unsafe at the grounds,” she said.

“These grants will help clubs make some easy changes to keep players, staff and spectators safe, no matter the sport.”

The initiatives up for funding could include protective player equipment, safety and shelter structures like behind-goal netting or shade sails, and maintenance facilities.

Club eligibility will be determined by an affiliation to either WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country or the WorkSafe Country Netball League, and an occupational health and safety or risk management program must be in action.

Football clubs have until 9 May to apply at aflvic.smartygrants.com.au/worksafe_clubsafetyfund, and netball clubs can submit their applications before 1 July to vic.netball.com.au/worksafe-club-safety-fund.
