Big regional stage for rapper
AT the age of fourteen, Sami Regague took a passion for music and started to experiment, putting his own lyrics to some beats.
Four years on, with a few of his tracks available to stream online, the Ballarat Grammar year 12 student has stumbled into the first major gig of his budding R&B-rap career.
“I uploaded a couple of songs onto the Triple J Unearthed site for a few people to listen to, and I got a call from Triple J,” he said.
“They had heard the songs, and the team there was really liking them. They said, ‘congratulations, you get to go on tour with a few of Australia’s biggest artists’.”
Eighteen-year-old Sami is a winner of the Triple J Unearthed All-Ages Tour Competition, and in early-2022, he will perform three shows in regional Victoria for the national youth broadcaster and music charity The Push.
“Out of nine winners, I’m the only one with three shows; Ballarat on February 13th opening for Mallrat and Ninajirachi, and Stawell and Warrnambool in March, opening for The Smith Street Band and Alex Lahey.
“This opportunity has legitimised my music. It means I get to get my name and face out to a pretty wide audience, opening for some of Australia’s biggest stars,” Sami said.
“Performing live is something I haven’t done too much of, so I’m looking forward to doing it in front of a good crowd. There should be some great press around it as well.”
Inspired by the musical stylings of Drake, The Kid Laroi, and Allday, Sami’s ultimate goal is to fully live off his creative output.
