BALLARAT road cycling collective The Saxons are one of many groups preparing for another Cycle Classic this weekend, raising money for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).
The group of retired doctors, geologists, teachers, accountants, bank managers and everyday riders prefer to be known as an autonomous collective rather than a formal cycling club but share a passion for cycling for a cause.
Group member Jamie Govan said most members have been touched by cancer, so it is important to support FECRI.
“Most of us have been touched by cancer somewhere along the line,” he said.
“We’re doing it for the reason of trying to find a cure for cancer.
“I think [FECRI] are going to uncover the secret to cure cancer here.”
Since the McCallum Trophy for most kilometres ridden was introduced, the Saxons have won it every year.
Last year they had a team of 49 riders and this year they’re hoping for 50.
Previous Saxon members are travelling from Queensland and NSW to take part in the event and catch up with old friends.
“It gives us something to do, it gives us a purpose in life, and it keeps us fit,” Mr Govan said.
“When we have things like the ability to raise money for cancer … it just adds an extra dimension to what we’re doing and what we’re about.”
