AS of last week the second stage works on Selkirk Stadium, the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre complex are complete.

Funded by the State Government, the $5.2 development on the Norman Street side of Basketball Ballarat’s home facility has three 3×3 basketball courts outside, centres for strength and conditioning, and learning, and a mobile 3×3 court for away events.

Basketball Ballarat chair Kim Holloway said 2022 is an exciting time for the association, and the city’s broader sporting community, as the bright blue site positions itself as the regional home of the 3×3 game.

“We have so many more great facilities; upgraded courts, 3×3 courts that provide around-the-clock access to basketball, while the learning and function spaces are opportunities for community and corporate groups to come together,” she said.

City of Ballarat mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said projects like these provide spaces for more people of all ages and abilities to get active, involved in sport, and enjoying a healthy lifestyle.

This second stage of development for Selkirk Stadium is very much aligned to one of our key Council Plan 2021-2025 goal initiatives of a healthy, connected and inclusive community,” he said.

“It showcases Ballarat’s investment in supporting sport for everyone. In particular, it recognises the need to foster youth sport, and sports options, for long term social, recreational and economic benefit.

“This is a development that shows our commitment to basketball in Ballarat. It acknowledges the importance of helping athletes physically off the court through the new strength and conditioning facility, as well as helping build their mental preparedness through the new learning centre.”

Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison said stage two boosts the list of “world class sporting facilities right here in Ballarat.”

“The strength and conditioning centre will be a great asset to elite athletes right across western Victoria.”

To coincide with the ribbon cutting the NBL 3×3 Big Hustle National Championships were held at the site last week.
