IN 1967, a senior citizens club began in a church hall in Ballarat North.

The group grew and members decided to fundraise, and apply for grants, to cover the costs of purchasing a block of municipal land and building their own clubrooms.

Ballarat North Senior Citizens Centre has been on that Walker and Armstrong street site since 1973, and last week, members and guests celebrated their social group’s belated 55th anniversary with a party.

“We are the oldest club of this kind in Ballarat, and still going strong,” said president Dianne Ingle.

“It’s an outlet for people, and somewhere to go. There’s a real buzz in the room today.”

Members of five and 32 years respectively, Les Riddoch and Margaret Mayo.

Member of 32 years, Margaret Mayo, was acknowledged during the event, presented with her life membership.

“I have really enjoyed cards, bingo, and lots of lovely bus trips,” she said.

There were also speeches, a cake-cutting, and live music throughout the afternoon.

Margaret Bailey handed out raffle tickets as guests arrived and has been involved with the club for 21 years, both as a former secretary and committee member.

She said the group hasn’t just provided opportunities for her to give back to the community, but it’s a place that’s given much to her.

Everything came up roses, including the special cake, at the anniversary event.

“When my husband died, the club actually saw me through, because I came straight back,” she said.

“They were all here for me. That’s what clubs are for. It’s a friendly club, it’s easy to get to, with lots of facilities. I love the club.”

Ballarat North Senior Citizens encourage people over 55 to join them as they aim to rebuild their membership.

“We need younger people to step up and come onto the committee,” Mrs Bailey said. “We need more participation, and more membership to keep running.”
