FREE antenatal evenings are being held by the Ballarat and District Multiple Births Association in October.

The sessions will take place on Thursday 19 October and Thursday 26 October from 6.30pm at Russel Square and aim to provide support for parents expecting multiples.

There will be information provided by anaesthesiologists, physiotherapists, and experienced multiple parents.

“What you get is one-one-one with an independent obstetrician and someone who has a lot of experience with twins and multiple births,” said Matt Britton, the co-ordinator of the sessions.

“We also get a lactation consultant, a midwife, and a mum and dad’s perspective to give a bit of insight.

“That stuff is gold for people.”

Mr Britton said it is hoped the events will provide parents with confidence and reassurance.

“It’s about being comfortable because from our experience not many people go through a multiple birth so there isn’t as much knowledge, reassurance and tools out there,” he said.

“We are giving parents information about what they’re going to be up for.”

Mr Britton joined the Ballarat and District Multiple Births Association after an unexpected twin pregnancy and said the antenatal sessions provided valuable information.

“Multiple kids are just so different even like how to feed them both at the same time, what happens in deliveries,” he said.

“We went to the Multiple Births Association, and it was probably the best thing we did because we thought we knew it but it gave us more tools.”

As well as providing information for expecting parents, the sessions can be a way to meet other parents in the same position.

“It also creates a community because the people we went to the antenatal nights with, we are now really good mates,” said Mr Britton.
