A FREE sewing circle has started at Ballarat East Neighbourhood House for people who want to learn the skills of the craft.

Held on Tuesdays from 3pm until 5pm at Barkley Square, the sessions provide an opportunity for the community to get together and work on sewing projects.

“We have just started a beginner sewing circle here and people were asking extra questions that we couldn’t cover in the course of a class,” said sewing circle member and teacher of the beginner class, Christine Segaert.

“We decided to run a social sewing group so people can work on a project, help each other and I can help them.”

The sessions are free and participants are welcome to bring along their own supplies, sewing machine, and other equipment.

“It’s way to focus on sewing and have fun with people that have similar interests,” said Ms Segaert. “Bring a project of whatever you want to sew, it doesn’t matter if it’s hand sewing or a machine.”

“There’s a lot of people here with different knowledge and they help each other too.”

Ms Segaert said participants enjoy the fact they can come to these social sewing sessions whenever they feel like it.

“The thing that people like about the social sewing is it’s not a commitment for a whole term so you don’t feel bad if you can’t come next week,” she said. “It doesn’t matter, you come when you want.”
