Singles night will spotlight Cambodian poverty

A SINGLES night will be held on Valentine’s Day at Morshead Park to raise funds to send two women to Cambodia.

Yvette Sarra and Kaz Fergus are heading over in late February to donate their time to Hair Aid.

The mission of the organisation is to teach people how to cut hair so they can start their own microbusinesses, earn money to buy fresh water and food, educate their children and find housing.

Ms Sarra, a social worker, will be offering back up support. She said her trip will be about “getting women off the streets.

“Hair Aid is looking at people that are in critical poverty and trying to help women who are wanting to leave the sex trade,” she said.

“It’s about being there, being open, listening and building rapport. Our job is to try to empower them and find out what ways we might be able to help them.

“We’re just here to help them find another path in life and look after their children as well. It’s a softer, more gentle way. I’m really passionate about it.”

Thirty hairdressers are set to travel to Cambodia and more than 3500 people have been trained to cut hair since 2014 with Hair Aid across Asia.

Ms Sarra said the Singles Night will not only be a fabulous fundraiser to take her and Ms Fergus to Cambodia, but a lot of fun.

“It’s about providing that face to face environment for people of all ages to meet people,” she said.

“We’re going to have really cool activities to break the ice and get people talking to each other – salsa dancing, auctioning off a mystery dinner date… It’s going to be a fantastic event.”
