Sporting’s best converge in Ballarat
THIS month the City of Ballarat is the host location of seven major sporting events showcasing the region’s facilities and bringing visitors to town.
All events are supported by the municipality and they are expected to bring 2000 competitors and their families, friends and supporters to the region.
Mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said Ballarat is a premier sporting destination.
“We are thrilled to be able host these sporting events over the summer school holiday period as Ballarat becomes a hive of activity,” she said.
“We have invested heavily in sport over many years to not only benefit our local clubs and athletes, but also make our facilities attractive options to host events like these.
“Having thousands of additional visitors in the city will provide a welcome boost to many of our hospitality and accommodation businesses.”
The action kicked off on Monday with the Cricket Australia Under 16 Women’s Cricket Championship which includes matches at Eastern Oval, Frank Bourke Oval, CE Brown Reserve, Alfredton Reserve, Western Oval, Mount Clear Recreation Reserve, Buninyong Community Facility, Russell Square, and St Patrick’s College.
The Bowls Victoria Region Sides Bowls Championships began today, Friday 10 January, and will involve 200 bowlers from around Victoria competing to become state champions.
The disc golf Golden Classic will be on this weekend at Victoria Park Disc Golf Course and the new Mount Xavier Disc Golf Course, and the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre will host the Australian Underwater Hockey National Championships beginning on Sunday.
Around 650 rowers will take to Lake Wendouree for the Ballarat Regatta on Saturday 18 January and the program of events will conclude with the Basketball Australia Under 20 National Championships beginning Tuesday 18 January.
