The funding is part of the Mechanics’ Institutes Grants Program which supports organisations to renovate their facilities, pursue historical projects, purchase books, software and equipment, and digitise records.
BMI board chair Paula Nicholson said they are hoping to use the funding to upgrade some of the facility’s smaller rooms that are perfect for local groups to hire.
“It’s to bring more visitors into the building but also to attract and provide for smaller community groups at a reasonable rate to hire our spaces,” she said.
“It’s about being able to draw more people into he building to understand that there is more than one library in the town and it provides a different service.”
The program includes $109,000 in funding throughout Victoria with $9000 to each of the 11 Mechanics’ Institutes that provide a library service and $10,000 for the peak Victorian body.
“Mechanics’ Institutes have a proud record of being a space for learning and community globally for over 200 years – these grants will ensure that they can continue to serve Victorians,” Minister for Local Government Nick Staikos said.

“Mechanics’ Institutes were one of the most important social innovations of the 19th century – these grants will help their invaluable library collections remain for future generations to enjoy.”
Ms Nicholson thanked the State Government for their support of mechanics’ institutes.
“We’re very thankful for the grant,” she said.
“We can’t really make momentous changes to the way we do things on our standard income, we really depend on grants and value the appreciation of the government.”
Membership to the BMI Library costs $65 a year and includes access to the heritage collection as well as contemporary books, videos and magazines.
Members also receive discounted entry to events such as Twilight Talks and historical discussions.
