Sunday concert to benefit Music Foundation

THE Anglican Cathedral of Christ the King will resonate to the sounds of trumpets, trombone, tuba, French horn and organ when The Little Brass Band and Cathedral organist Leigh Askew come together perform Magnificat.

This concert includes well-known secular, religious, hymns and folk music, to soothe and inspire, and will also raise funds for the Cathedral’s Music Foundation.

The genesis of the concert came from The Little Brass Band who, having previously played in the Cathedral thought the wonderful acoustics would be the perfect space play with Askew.

Together they’ll perform works by Charpentier, Bach, Haydn, Sir Charles Stanford’s Magnificat Op 10 in Bb and finish with Hallelujah Chorus by Handel.

Askew and each member of The Little Brass Band understand and appreciate the importance of music in their lives that is why they have chosen to support The Cathedral Music Foundation.

The Foundation aims to promote music to a broad spectrum of interested and developing young musicians in Ballarat, focussing on the Cathedral choir, and organ.

Cathedral Dean the Very Rev Chris Chataway said that providing scholarships aimed to encourage the musical development of young people and for them to consider making a commitment to further their interest in choral music.

Following the concert and afternoon tea, the audience can join the congregation in a special choral evensong.

The Cathedral Choir, under the musical direction of Lyndell Allen, will be accompanied by brass and organ arrangements, provided by Askew and The Little Brass Band.

Tickets are $15 and include afternoon tea. They are available from the Cathedral on 5331 1183, or at the door on Sunday, 24 November at 3pm.
