ICONIC Lydiard Street cinema, The Regent, will re-open under the ownership of Palace Cinemas on Thursday 3 October.

In June, the historic movie theatre, which had been run by Steve Anderson and family for decades, closed effective immediately and entered voluntary liquidation, shocking the community and raising questions about whether films would ever be screened on site again.

But under the new name of Palace Regent Ballarat, the cinema will return next month.

“The Regent Cinema is a cherished community icon, and its avid audience perfectly aligns with our passion for sharing great cinema experiences,” said Palace Cinemas CEO Benjamin Zeccola.

“We are thrilled to bring the Palace touch to this iconic venue while ensuring we save and loyally serve what locals love about it most.

“Palace Regent Ballarat will not only preserve a treasured piece of Ballarat’s history but will also elevate the local cinema experience.

“We look forward to showcasing an even wider selection of films and delivering the best in cinema to the film enthusiasts of Ballarat.”

As part of the Palace Cinemas group, the venue is expected to host film festivals, including a British Film Festival in November.

A statement from Palace Cinemas said management invite former Regent Cinema staff to consider returning to the workplace.

“While the venue’s reopening will require building a team from the ground up, we deeply value the passion and experience of former employees,” the statement said.
