TAKE a trip to the south side and heat up with spice this Saturday.

Four local businesses, located south of Sturt Street, have decided to team up to offer an evening of tasty delights – Get Spicy on the Southside.

The Crafty Squirrel will be serving up churros from the Paella Guy, and Saltbush Kitchen will have bushfood tastings, a Kittelty’s cake pop-up, Chepstowe Wines, and Lucky and James chocolate.

At Hattie and the Wolf there will be spice tastings by Nomad Chilli and mulled gin with Mrs Baker’s Stillhouse, while a middle eastern menu will be on offer next door at Cornerstone Cafe.

This is the first time the businesses have organised a winter event together, however Brigid Corcoran, owner of Saltbush Kitchen, said its inspiration came from a successful event last November.

“We’re from the best neighbourhood in Ballarat which I’ve coined the south village,” she said.

“We had a fabulous night in November, it was the first one we did, which was a walk around to all the venues and it was so well received.”

People who shop at one or more of the venues will have a chance to win $200 worth of vouchers.

The aim of the event is to encourage people to embrace the cold and explore local neighbourhoods.

“Ballarat winter is Ballarat winter and it’s about embracing the cold,” said Ms Corcoran.

“You pop your raincoats on, you pop your boots on, and you get out and embrace it.”

Morgan Wills, owner of The Crafty Squirrel said the four businesses are different but complimentary and it is important to highlight what they have to offer to the neighbourhood.

“I think it’s important to showcase to our local community,” she said. “In this precinct, they live in a really fantastic part of Ballarat.”

Get Spicy on the Southside will be on Saturday 20 July from 4pm until 7pm.
