SOVEREIGN Hill has won gold for excellence in accessible tourism and for outstanding contributions by volunteers at the Victorian Tourism Awards.

The excellence in accessible tourism award acknowledges the organisation’s commitment to inclusivity with wheelchair-friendly pathways, sensory-friendly resources, and the launch of an accessible gold panning experience.

The contribution by volunteers award recognises the 240-member volunteer team who help bring the outdoor museum to life.

“Our volunteers are the heart and soul of Sovereign Hill,” said Sara Quon, CEO of Sovereign Hill Museums Association.

“Their tireless efforts and enthusiasm make it possible for us to preserve and share the incredible stories of Australia’s gold rush era.

“At the same time, accessibility is the cornerstone of Sovereign Hill’s mission to connect people with our heritage and experiences.

“Whether through our inclusive infrastructure upgrades or our accessible programming, we are committed to ensuring Sovereign Hill is a destination that everyone can enjoy.”

The Ballarat Wildlife Park took home silver in the major tourist attractions category and Kryal Castle also won second prize in the tourist attraction category.

“This recognition is a reflection of our incredible team, passionate about creating memorable experiences for every visitor while fostering a deep appreciation for unique wildlife,” said Greg Parker, director of Ballarat Wildlife Park.

“We are humbled to receive this honour and thank our visitors and the Ballarat community for their ongoing support.”

The Goods Shed Ballarat and City of Ballarat won bronze in their respective categories – business events venues and Local Government award for tourism.

Hotel Vera, Eerie Tours and the Ballarat International Foto Biennale were also finalists.
