FINANCIAL stability sought by Voice FM is in jeopardy due to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If things don’t improve the community radio station could go into “hibernation” within two weeks.

Voice has been operated automatically for about a month and a statement released by the broadcaster’s board on Monday evening advised volunteers that the downturn has impacted the operations of the radio station.

“Voice has had a massive decline in revenue over the past four weeks, which is seriously concerning,” the statement said.

“Many will be aware that we had a plan in place to create a stable financial position that has now been thwarted by this pandemic. Until now, we were on track.”

The Voice FM board will meet again in about 10 days and if things don’t improve, there’s an option to temporarily switch off the broadcast signal.

“[I]f necessary and as a worst-case scenario, we may need to place the station in ‘hibernation’ for the foreseeable future,” the statement said.

In an attempt to turn around the financial position, the Voice board said they were considering fundraisers and also asked volunteers for suggestions on revenue sources.

“We have also written to many organisations seeking funding support,” the statement said.

“We haven’t given up – if you know of any organisations which may be able to help please get in contact. There are a number of ways in which we can support in return.”
