WORKS to improve the health and biodiversity of Sebastopol’s Redan Wetlands, and the water quality of the Yarrowee River have begun, with $1,893,000 from the Federal Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program and $502,420 from the City of Ballarat.

To aid natural filtration, a litter trap is being replaced, and sediment and some weeds are being removed from ponds.

Some areas are being replanted, accessible pedestrian paths are being improved, and banks are being stabilised.

“This is an important project for the Ballarat community, with the Yarrowee running through our town,” said Member for Ballarat, Catherine King.

“The removal of sediment and installation of the new litter trap will rejuvenate the Redan Wetlands and maintain the integrity of our waterways.”

City of Ballarat mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said removing excess sediment will help the wetlands naturally treat stormwater.

Signs have been installed in the area to notify residents and recreational users of the space to works on and around the trails, but the Wallaby Track will remain open.
