A FREE seven-week program is being held from next month with the aim of giving back to carers.

Organised by Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities, or ADEC, thanks to a Carers Victoria grant, the Circle of Wellbeing for Carers workshop series will provide a range of support and resources for those looking after others.

ADEC capacity building team leader Kerry Maher-Musarra said the program is about empowering carers with local assistance.

“It’s to bring carers together, provide a space of respite, connection to local community, resources, and pathways,” she said.

“This program enables us to bring local presenters in to run presentations as well as run health, nutrition, fitness, and art therapy components.

“It’s a very social, empowering space to be in.”

The two-hour sessions will be delivered by ADEC representatives and local presenters with topics ranging from advocacy to health, finances, and local government resources.

Other subjects like in-home fitness techniques and meal prepping will also be covered, as well as art therapy.

Ms Maher-Musarra said it is important carers are supported in continuing their roles.

“Carers are often very tired,” she said. “They need extra support and they often don’t know where to go to get them.

“It’s important to have our presenters come along but also hear what current barriers are also in place or additional support is needed so we can make that pathway of referral.”

The program will also be held in Geelong from the beginning of May.

Local sessions will be held each Thursday from 10.30am at the Ballarat South Community Hub, starting on 6 February.
