Reimagine, recreate, restore
THIS weekend, people across the globe will mark the United Nations’ Environment Day.
Some local residents were set to recognise World Environment Day and its theme, ‘reimagine, recreate, restore’, this weekend with the Alfredton Rotary Club at Lucas’ Rotary Centennial Park, however the larger planned gathering will not take place due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Club president David Sanders said the celebration would have seen attendees pop on their gardening gloves, bring their trowels, plant some trees, weed, and re-stake current trees.
“We hope to soon review the proposed future of our community park overlooking the fabulous wetlands together, and network with like-minded people in the community,” he said.
Mr Sanders will still be at the site this Saturday, 5 June from 10am in case any community members still arrive at Rotary Centennial Park.
Winners of Alfredton Rotary’s Inaugural Environmental Challenge were to be announced, but these presentations will now take place at the Club’s presidential change-over meeting on Monday, 21 June at the Ballarat Golf Club.
The Environmental Challenge rewards people or groups for clever ideas that can have a lasting benefit to our environment.
Mr Sanders said Mullawallah Wetlands are “integral” to the area’s ecosystem, and those who attend the next celebration on site will discover ways in which they can support the space and its surrounds to be their best.
“Alfredton Rotary invites you to come and find out how you can be a part of the stewardship of the area adjacent to this cherished resource, or maybe sponsor a tree.
“This will be a great day to show that the Ballarat community are united in working towards a clean, green and sustainable future,” he said.
This World Environment Day 2021, the United Nations is encouraging people to be part of #GenerationRestoration now, by growing more trees and plants in cities, and in the country, cleaning waterways and the oceans, and exploring more sustainable diets.
