PHOENIX College student Millie Collins will head to New Zealand this month as part of the United Nations youth Aotearoa Leadership Tour.

The 2023 City of Ballarat Young Citizen of the Year is one of 16 Australians selected for the two-week tour.

“I am one of the first people from Ballarat to be provided the opportunity to represent Australia in this exciting opportunity to strengthen my awareness of Indigenous culture,” Ms Collins said.

The aim of the trip is to empower young people to be mindful global citizens, to broaden their horizons, and understanding of international politics and diverse peoples.

There’s also a focus on cultural exchange, personal development, global awareness, networking, and collaboration.

“During this period, we will be traveling to Sydney, Wellington, Rotorua, Auckland and Waitangi, where participants will engage in a range of both leadership and educational activities to grow as individuals, and conference with political figures and fellow young people,” Ms Collins said.

“We have numerous opportunities to conference with political figures, and advocates for mental health, Indigenous rights, and women’s rights from all areas around New Zealand, and learn about the work they do.

“I’m looking forward to broadening my understanding by listening to their stories, and hope I’m inspired by some ideas that I can bring back to Ballarat.”

In order to get to New Zealand, Ms Collins has needed to fundraise and has received sponsorship.

“CDC Ballarat has provided me with financial assistance to embark upon this once in a lifetime experience,” she said.

“I’m very grateful. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to partake in this.”

Ms Collins’ application for the trip included writing essays, and recording an audio presentation, sharing her experience as a volunteer and activist, and why she would be an asset to the tour.
