The size of Mitchell Park is approximately 19.6 square kilometres and has 5 parks covering nearly 0.6 per cent of total area.

The population of Mitchell Park in 2011 was 752 people and by the 2016 Census the population was 875 showing a population growth of 16.4 per cent in the area during that time.

The area’s most significant landmark is the Ballarat Airport with its history dating back to when it was known as the Ballarat Common where the first pilot training was thought to have been first offered on the grass around 1915.

By 1934 the airport was formalised with the construction of a tin hangar and in 1940 the site was became part of the Empire Air Training Scheme. The RAAF retained the airfield as its Radio School until 1961 when the then-Shire of Ballarat negotiated with the Department of Interior to become the civil operator of the airfield.

In 2006 the aerodrome was recommended for listing on the Victorian Heritage Register included on 27 July 2007.

Today the Airport has around 80 flight movements per day made up of business, emergency services, general aviation and flight training.
