Bunga rollers ready for big weekend
BUNGAREE Bowling Club members are seeing this weekend’s double header of Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region Pennant bowls as an opportunity.
The games set for rounds nine and 10 are a change for the club’s three Pennant sides to consolidate their positions on their respective ladders.
“We had a fairly tight contest throughout the game in our match against Daylesford at home last Saturday and it was only in the last part of the game that we finished off strongly and took out the game,” said club resident John Wade.
“It was our first win over Daylesford in the past two seasons.”
The strong performance in Chris Thornton’s rink over Daylesford’s Winston Silbereisen paved the way for Bungaree to take out the match by 15 shots with three rinks up.
“Our club fields teams in Divisions 3, 5 and 8 and in each of the competitions the contest to play finals is very close in the top half of the ladder so we hope good results in our two matches this coming weekend will consolidate our position,” Wade said.
“Things are running along smoothly at present and as a Club we are having a good year both on and off the greens.”
Bungaree’s top side will be on the road on the weekend travelling to Beaufort on Saturday and back up with their game at Ballarat on Sunday.
The Division 3 squad will take confidence from last weekend’s effort to ensure they achieve success to retain top position on the ladder.
On Saturday Bungaree’s Division 5 side will host Midlands followed up by Daylesford on Sunday.
At present the team is in fifth position in a tight contest between third and fifth, so a successful weekend could see the side moving into the four.
Last Saturday Bungaree had a narrow one-shot victory in their game at Central Wendouree with strong wins in Daryl Browning’s and Brian Jones’ rinks playing a crucial role in the team’s success.
Division 8 sees Bungaree field their third side in the smaller six team competition.
Saturday they will host ladder leaders Linton and then travel on Sunday to Sebastopol.
Last Saturday’s win against Webbcona, due in part to a strong performance by Gary Checkley’s rink, gives the team members confidence of the possibility of success in this coming weekend’s matches which may see the side climb further up the ladder from their current fourth place.
In the New Year the club will host an open triples tournament on Saturday 13 January followed up by their annual Stan Forbes Memorial Fours tournament on Sunday 18 February with entries being lodged through Chris Jones phone 0422 928 284.
