Clean sweep for City Oval
THIS year’s Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region fours championship has been a success for City Oval Bowling Club.
In their centenary year, they have have taken out both the men’s and women’s fours champs played last Sunday.
The team of Heath Fumhberger, Wayne Roberts, Ben Morris and skipper Gavin Mann took out the men’s title whilst the women’s team consisted of Sandra Grano, Sally McCracken, Elizabeth Kierce second and skipper Janine Roberts.
In the final, the City Oval women had a comfortable 15- shot victory over Clunes, skippered by Eileen Spong, after Janine Robert’s rink took an early strong lead winning the first four ends and accumulating 13 shots, before Clunes hit the scoreboard.
Although the Clunes team started to consistently share in winning the remaining ends, the team were unable to overcome the margin.
The men’s competition was a closer affair with the City Oval team going to a 12 to 6 lead midway through the game, however Victoria’s Varcoe’s rink took stock in the second half of the game to claw back to within three shots.
However, City Oval winning the last end by the single shot secured the victory for the Men’s team. Sixteen men’s teams were entered into the competition, and 11 women’s teams.
City Oval’s Ian Robinson said the club is looking forward to good weather in the coming fortnight to enable all their three grass greens to return to good playable surfaces.
