Family to ride on-field

THREE generations of the same family will take to the polocrosse field this weekend as the Ballan Polocrosse Club hosts its annual carnival in Mitchell Park.

As part of the competition the Armstrong/ Discher Family will comprise a team with Hugh Armstrong, his four children Megan, Tyson, Tessa and Bridie, and two grandchildren Matilda and Skyla all competing.

Having first started playing polocrosse 50 years ago, Mr Armstrong said is looking forward to the tournament and seeing his granddaughters play.

“All four of my children have achieved great heights in the sport with all of them representing Victoria at different times,” he said.

“Tyson was also the youngest player to ever represent Australia. Matilda will be playing on a horse that Tyson, Tessa and Bridie have all represented Victoria riding, and I hope that the tradition lives on.”

Developed in Australia before the Second World War Polocrosse, one horse sport and is best described as a mix of polo and lacrosse.

Riders play in one of three positions: scorer, centre or defence and the team is divided into two sections of three players who play two chuckas each.

Ballan Polocrosse Club carnival goes this Friday, 28 and Sunday, 29 February at the Ballarat Polocrosse Grounds, 207 Airport Road, Mitchell Park. Play gets underway at 8am. Entry is free.
