MEMBERS of the region’s various multicultural communities are being invited to try their hand at badminton and table tennis for free.

Delivered by Badminton Ballarat and the Ballarat Table Tennis Association, the come and try program is aimed at introducing the sports to people of diverse backgrounds.

The initiative is being supported by Sports Central, Badminton Victoria and Table Tennis Victoria.

Sports Central programs manager Andrew Milligan said it is important that multicultural communities are supported in pursuing the sports.

“We’re aware there’s many multicultural communities that haven’t necessarily got involved in those two sports or aren’t aware of the facilities and opportunities in Ballarat,” he said.

“We’re creating that opportunity to come along, have a look at the facilities, and be involved in a free program, and to be aware of the social and competition opportunities that are available.”

The program started earlier in February and is being held at Ballarat Table Tennis Association’s stadium in Wendouree each Saturday until 1 March.

Sessions include 50 minutes of tennis coaching followed by 50 minutes of badminton with all equipment provided, with later offerings to potentially include friendly games of both.

Mr Milligan said the inaugural offering was well-received.

“Participants had a great time and said they enjoyed the coaching element of it,” he said.

“At the table tennis, we turned on the robot that feeds the balls to the participants which was good fun.

“One person in particular was returning to table tennis for the first time in 20 years.

“Clearly, he was quite an accomplished player but hadn’t participated since immigrating to Australia.”

Sessions will run from 10am to noon.
