KIDS who are keen to try a new sport are invited to give hockey a go with Hockey Ballarat as part of an upcoming skills-based program.

Coordinator Zac Smith said the six-week Hookin2Hockey initiative is all about helping children aged five to 12, or primary school aged, to learn something new and have fun.

“We incorporate skills into fun and engaging games, building up each week, whereby at the end of the program you can call yourself a hockey player and play in our local winter competition and social summer hockey programs,” he said.

“We also provide activity ideas for at home so families can practice and make it a sport that all the family can be involved and engaged in.”

Mr Smith said children are grouped on the night based on their age and skill level.

“Everyone can get the right support they need to excel and enjoy a sport that is played by and enjoyed all over the world,” he said.

“Participants in the program love the engagement and excitement of trying a different sport in hockey that is unlike many mainstream sports in Ballarat currently.

“Hockey is a sport that does not rely on you being the tallest person or the fastest on the pitch, everyone can find something that they are good at making it a unique and diverse sport.

“The program extends on that however with siblings joining in the program once they see how fun it is and parents get the opportunity to be a part of their children’s sporting journey from the beginning.”

In term four, Hockey Ballarat members are aiming to run their first junior female competition, and hope to attract new girls through Hookin2Hockey.

Hookin2Hockey will be held at Ballarat High School, 1726 Sturt Street Lake Gardens from tonight, Friday 9 August, from 6pm to 7pm.

The final session of the six is Friday 13 September. Price is $80 or $135 with equipment pack.
