Disc Golf Open a Nationals warm-up
REGISTRATIONS are open for the 2021 Inverleigh Disc Golf Open which will be played on the town’s new eighteen-hole course.
To be held on Saturday, 13 November, assistant tournament director Matt Hill said the competition will be hosted as part of the 2021 Aussie Disc Golf Day festivities.
“Events will run all over Australia on the same day. There will be over 500 people across the country playing disc golf, everyone’s scores will be put together, and they’ll find an overall winner across the country for all the different events,” he said.
“We can accommodate a maximum of 72 players on the day, and we’re hoping to get that many people, mostly from regional Victoria; Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo.
“Geelong has some of the top disc golf players in the country, so the standard in the professional division of the Inverleigh Disc Golf Open will be very highly fought.”
Mr Hill said Inverleigh Disc Golf and the regular golf club have been working together over the past year to expand their course, and make it one of the best in Australia.
“The National Championships have been delayed to February next year, so this will be a warm-up event to test the course out before the Championships in 2022.
“The course is a challenging one in the bush. It’s very technical, and the new holes being put in will be a bit of a change, favouring bigger throwers,” he said.
“There’s not many full 18-hole courses in Victoria, so it’s really something to have another one, especially in the community of Inverleigh and in Golden Plains.”
Any disc golf player, whether new or experienced, can compete in the Inverleigh Disc Golf Open, even if it will be their first-ever tournament. Equipment can be purchased from the Geelong Disc Golf Club.
“You can still come and have fun in the novice division. There is also an under-15 division,” Mr Hill said.
