New umps wanted
BALLARAT Cricket Umpires Association members are looking for new recruits to join their organisation.
Anyone who is 15 years or older is invited to apply to become a cricket umpire and no previous experience is required.
All training is provided, and umpires can earn up to $150 a day.
“The commitment is to learn and understand the laws of cricket,” said association secretary, Ian Morris.
“They don’t have to know the laws of cricket now, we will train them.”
Skills umpires develop include communication, mental fitness, and managing people.
Mr Morris said the best benefit of being an umpire if getting to watch the game up close.
“We call it the best seat in the house because you’re right involved in the game,” he said.
“You get good comradery with the other umpires and certainly with the other players.
“It’s an enjoyable day and you get paid for it.”
Games occur on Saturday afternoons and there are other opportunities to umpire mid-week.
Children aged 13 and over can also apply to become junior umpires who work on a Friday night.
To get involved, contact Mr Morris on 0400 600 844.
