Station fires up for footy fun
FIRE Rescue Victoria firefighters at the Ballarat City Fire Station wore their footy colours ahead of the AFL Grand Final last month to fundraise for cancer research.
On Sunday 22 September the fire officers and their families led their own Footy Colours Day and donated money to the Fight Cancer Foundation.
Firefighters at the local CBD station have died from cancer in recent years, and leading firefighter Matthew MacGillivray said the day was a way to honour them, and advocate for a cure.
“This definitely hits close to home for many crew members, so we thought it was something we could do to support each other and the Foundation.” he said.
“It was great, we were able to make it a bit of a family day and I think the crew really enjoyed that.
“We had a target of $1000 which we have already passed online but we are hoping to raise a little bit more in station.
“Being a Victorian Station it was predominantly AFL colours, but we have a couple of Rugby fans so there was also a Wallabies jersey.”
Pies and hot dogs were the footy-themed foods of the day,
Firefighters encouraged their families and friends to also donate to the cause, and are calling on the wider community to give to the foundation if they can.
