EUREKA Cycling Club celebrated National Volunteers Week with perfect racing conditions under blue skies and beaming sunshine on Sunday.

The team of long-term volunteers are the faces of Eureka and on this day, Lois Goldfinch managed the club rooms, Mal Rock organised the corner marshals before heading out to manage a corner himself, Bill Goldfinch performed commissaire duties and Graeme Parker managed race entries before performing another brilliant piece of handicapping.

An exciting handicap race was staged on the Weatherboard circuit. The scratch riders were on a mission and caught the two-minute group inside 20 kilometres.

The large group collected the race lead at the bell lap, with eleven riders all still in with a chance of taking the victory.

No one was able to get away on the final lap and the sprint finish saw the eleven riders all battling out the finish. In the end Jason Hendry was packing too much power and claiming the lead just metres before the chequered flag.

50-kilometre Weatherboard Handicap race results: 1st – Jason Hendry (scratch), 2nd – Jason Birch (2 min), 3rd – Tony Mirabella (scratch), 4th – Peter Canny (2 min), 5th – Shaun Martin (8 min). Fastest time – Jason Hendry (scratch) in 1h 19m 30s, ave. 38.5kph
