ARE you seeking school holiday family fun, or wanting to start the year by giving a non-traditional sport a go?

Ballarat Ultimate members are running an ultimate frisbee come-and-try session at their home field at Royal Park in Buninyong this Tuesday 23 January.

President of Ballarat Ultimate, Leah Cushion, said it’s a fun and inclusive sport for men and women, and people of all ages.

“It’s a feel-good sport with a welcoming atmosphere,” she said.

“It’s a mixed sport, it’s non-contact, and it’s self-refereed, so players are modest and honest because they have to be accountable for their own decisions on the field.

“For those that might be sick of the standard sports, don’t have a sport that they call home, or feel daunted by getting into established sports, they can just step into frisbee.

“It’s fun and fast-paced, but no one expects you to know the rules.”

Ballarat Ultimate has about 50 regular players, and this weekend, they will host their annual major tournament.

The Golden City Classic includes frisbee action at Trekardo Park, and disc golf at Victoria Park.

“If people are interested in trying ultimate frisbee next week, the tournament is a great way for people to see how it’s played first,” Ms Cushion said.

“We’ve got seven teams from around the state coming to participate in that event at Trekardo Park on Saturday, so that’s primarily why we chose this time of year for the come-and-try.”

The trial evening will run from 6pm to 7pm with a stream for people over the age of 15, and a group for children and teens.

Leagues are run every Tuesday night during the school term at Royal Park in Buninyong.
