Victoria bowlers look to the future
DAYLESFORD’S Winston Silbereisen was pleased to see the Club’s Division 3 team record its third win in the opening part of the season.
“In recent years we haven’t started the season so well but so far it has been a pleasing start for us and if we continue to finish the season strongly we hope to look forward to playing off in the finals,” he said.
“Our match today was pretty tight all afternoon in three of our rinks, with Rodney Poxon’s rink being in charge all day.
“Both Wayne Bull’s and my rink were down several shots each towards the later stages of the game and on the last five ends we both managed to win the remaining ends and come home with two shots up on both the rinks, which gave us the win against BMS and 16 points for the afternoon.”
The win sees Daylesford secure fifth place on the ladder, just eight shots behind fourth-placed City Oval, while Ballarat Memorial Sport remains in sixth.
Playing at home, Daylesford’s Division 9 side had its first loss for the season, losing to Victoria where a strong performance by Larry Walsh’s rink saw the visitors secure a comfortable win.
Nevertheless, Daylesford still retains top spot on the divisional ladder just two points ahead of Victoria.
The remaining Daylesford Saturday pennant team competing in Division 5 travelled to Victoria, and despite the wins in the rinks of Barry Yanner and Timothy Dawson it was Victoria’s Barry Davis rink that secured the shots to see the home side win the points for the afternoon.
“The club is going well and the pick-up in the bistro trade has been good for us. We have a goal, if finances permit, to look at the possibility of installing a synthetic surface to our bottom green similar to Creswick, hopefully in a couple of years or so,” Davis said.
“The monthly fours tournament that we run on the third Wednesday of the month has been a success and we started with 18 team entries that increased to 23 this month.
“The club’s major annual tournament is our Classic Fours, which will be held on Sunday 9 February.”

BMS held its annual Diggers Day triples tournament on Sunday, with a full house including team entries from as far away as Moulaleim (NSW), Strathfieldsaye, Bendigo, Lake Bolac, Norlane and Lara as well as other local district teams Clunes, Creswick, Learmonth, City Oval, Ballarat Sebastopol and Webbcona, together with club players.
“It was the best one we have had in a long while, starting off with the playing of the Last Post and Reveille by Dennis Hawke,” Graeme Inglis of BMS said.
“We had a full house with 30 team entries and the day’s weather was glorious for the day of bowls.”
Winners were City Oval’s Ian Robinson’s team that included Peter Orr and David Flintoff. Dual runners-up were Craig Meade’s and Ian Hedger’s teams.
BMS’s major annual Mickey Mason’s Memorial Fours tournament will be held on Sunday 26 January, with entries to David Andrews on 0413 459 665. The Ladies Triples Tournament will be on Wednesday 4 December with entries to Lynette Bryce on 0438 343 770.
