IF you enjoy swimming and would like to give a new sport a go, then Ballarat Water Polo could be the club for you.

The group is seeking at least 10 new members to train and play on Wednesday evenings at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre.

Club president Melinda Childs said members have been working hard to rebuild since the height of the pandemic and are aiming to attract twice as many players as they currently have.

“We’ve restructured our training sessions to accommodate both games and new players, and we’re hoping to retain the members we have,” she said.

“We’re running a come-and-try and junior training session from 7.30pm to 8pm, and from 8pm to 8.45pm we’ll have a game for everyone, so they can start to play, not just train for nothing.

“If we can double our numbers, we know we can organically grow the club, running competitions within the town.”

Ms Childs said training is enjoyable, but playing actual games is the most fun part of being involved.

“The games we play are really, really social, and they’re all about people learning,” she said.

“It’s a really relaxed space, a place to meet new people, and those that love water generally love the sport. For swimmers, it’s another way to get fit in the water.”

Players are welcome from about 12 years of age upwards, and it’s recommended that people can already comfortably swim 100 metres of freestyle before they begin.
