WAUBRA has enjoyed a good start to the bowls season, with the division 2 and 6 sides winning their first two games to help set up the country club to play a significant part in this season’s competition.

“Our division 2 match was a close call at the afternoon break and in the last half we managed to consolidate our position to take out the game by five shots,” Waubra club president Pat Clark said.

“Interestingly there was quite a variation in the scores over the four rinks with each side having two rinks up for the day.

“We knew the match against Creswick would be challenging as they have just been entered into the division 2 competition and have a depth of experienced bowlers who previously played in the higher division and we weren’t sure what to expect, so things are pretty good for us so far.

“We travel down to Ballan on Saturday and we expect this will be a tough game as their side always plays well at home and currently are the leading team.

Waubra’s Peter Moran, bowling for Carl Stepnell’s rink, helped the team with a strong win over Clunes.

“The move to bring Peter Goldsmith into division 2 to lead for Luke Molloy’s rink has been a positive outcome for our side and we hope this will continue for us on the weekend.

“In division 6 our club enjoyed a strong away win over Clunes with the rink skippered by Stephen Matcham having a strong win that set us up to take out the points. This sees the side head up the division 6 ladder.

“It is always a challenge for us being a smaller club having sufficient players available throughout the season but nevertheless we aim to keep building as a club and remain competitive throughout the year.”

Central Wendouree’s Margaret Wilkins is upbeat about her club’s fortunes.

“We have had an influx of the new bowlers, particularly younger ones, which is great for the club and this will help us consolidate our teams competing in divisions 3, 4 and 7,” she said.

“Our top side has won both its two matches in division 3 and currently holds third position on the ladder whilst our division 4 and 7 sides have had one win so far, with our division 7 side travelling to Sebastopol on Saturday and coming come with a narrow three-shot victory with the rinks of Bill Wilkins and Sue Peters performing strongly for the afternoon.”
