{"id":101554,"date":"2024-04-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=101554"},"modified":"2024-04-17T23:13:23","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T13:13:23","slug":"groovybmi-shindig-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/living\/groovybmi-shindig-a-success\/","title":{"rendered":"GroovyBMI shindig a success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MAJOR Ballaarat Mechanics&#8217; Institute fundraiser, the &#8216;Shindig&#8217; dinner and dance, has raised more than $10,000 to support the historic not-for-profit&#8217;s heritage building, programs and services.<\/p>\n<p>Held last Saturday evening in the BMI&#8217;s ballroom-cum-concert hall, the Minerva Space, the event saw three retro rocking bands The Hideaways, The Harmonies and The Surf Shadows entertain attendees with groovy music of the 1960s and 1970s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/BMIFundraiser_Shindi_82995.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ann Zaal and Wayne Jones.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many dressed in their retro best, got up and danced, and all enjoyed a two-course meal by Malcolm Roberts.<\/p>\n<p>BMI chair and president Paula Nicholson said the evening was also a way to attract new people to the historic facility by offering something different.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/BMIFundraiser_Shindi_82961.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Harmonies were one of three bands taking attendees back in time with their retro sounds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bands are comprised of Ballarat music royalty and donated their talent and time to deliver a night of iconic tunes&#8230; which inspired dancing and fundraising,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/BMIFundraiser_Shindi_82992.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terri Squire and Max Harris had their dancing shoes on and got into the groove.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over $10,000 was raised to enable the BMI to continue to deliver its program of community events, library services, talks, historic library collection preservation and activation, historic building maintenance and importantly the role the BMI can play in emphasising Ballarat as a significant tourism destination within our region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/BMIFundraiser_Shindi_82913.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BMI chair and president Paula Nicholson got up and sang with The Surf Shadows. Photos: MEDA DESIGN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kathryn Amor donated stunning floral centre pieces which were then purchased by the crowd as a further fundraising option.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Paul Medwell with his team ran the bar pro-bono and sponsored the wines for the evening.
