{"id":101600,"date":"2024-04-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-21T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=101600"},"modified":"2024-04-18T00:45:19","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T14:45:19","slug":"talk-to-look-at-a-lost-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/talk-to-look-at-a-lost-melbourne\/","title":{"rendered":"Talk to look at a lost Melbourne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FILM director Gus Berger is coming to the Ballaarat Mechanics\u2019 Institute next month to discuss his documentary <em>The Lost City of Melbourne<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The work looks at the cinemas, theatres and buildings across the city which no longer stand, and the event will include a live screening and discussion with Berger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring lockdown he decided to delve into the archives and construct a Melbourne that isn\u2019t here anymore using pictures and archival footage,\u201d said Ellen Becker, heritage collection curator at the BMI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was able to craft together a documentary that shows us all these buildings across Melbourne which are lost, particularly cinemas and theatres.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The screening will take place in the Minerva Theatre, which showed the invention of the cinematograph to Ballarat audiences for the first time in 1896.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really lovely that we will be watching this documentary that charts theatres we\u2019ve lost from the hay day of cinema in one of the very first cinemas,\u201d said Ms Becker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople will be able to watch this film in a place where people experienced moving pictures for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attendees will also have the opportunity to view a free exhibition which looks at the history of cinema in Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>All funds raised from the event will go towards the running of the BMI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the proceeds from the sales of the tickets from this event will be going towards supporting what we do,\u201d said Ms Becker.<\/p>\n<p>The event will begin at 6pm on Wednesday 1 May.
