{"id":101671,"date":"2024-04-19T16:59:34","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T06:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=101671"},"modified":"2024-04-19T18:01:21","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T08:01:21","slug":"campaign-raising-funds-for-native-bird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/campaign-raising-funds-for-native-bird\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaign raising funds for native bird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat Wildlife Park had a special visitor who was promoting the protection of native bird, the Tawny Frogmouth.<\/p>\n<p>Colleen Fillippa, founder and director of Fifteen Trees was at the park visiting their Tawny\u2019s and raising awareness for the Trees for Tawny Campaign.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n    <iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NAYe7mCSLAk?si=iZdzSf3ve8NV5ZhM title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fifteen Trees is a social enterprise based in central Victoria and Ms Fillippa is on a mission to plant 600 trees in Victoria and Tasmania as Tawny habitat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifteen Trees is actually 15 years old this year, so we were established in 2009, and I guess I started it because I wanted to do something for the environment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a long-time teacher in the classroom teaching biology and science, also active with my local Landcare group, but I wanted to step out of the classroom and find something that was a bit more tangible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each year the organisation focuses on a different animal and this year the Tawny Frogmouth was chosen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year we are going to raise funds for revegetation projects for the Tawny Frogmouth,\u201d said Ms Fillippa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to take time, it\u2019s going to take probably 10 to 15 years for these trees to get up, but we have to start planting now for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat Wildlife Park bird keeper Noak McKenzie said this is an important initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest threats to the Tawny Frogmouth is habitat loss and trees being cut down for land clearing or deforestation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColleen\u2019s initiative is really, really good to help plant more trees to give Tawnys more habitats to live in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each stringybark tree will cost the organisation $10, so Ms Fillippa is looking for $6000 in total, and any extra money will go towards tree guards.<\/p>\n<p>Donations close on Tuesday 23 April and so far, more than $3000 has been raised.<\/p>\n<p>To make a donation to the cause visit <strong>bit.ly\/4aW82lq<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/Tawny_57897.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Tawny Frogmouth is a native Australian bird.
