A CITY of palm trees in southern California’s Sonoran Desert has inspired an exhibition now on at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.<\/p>\n
Lost in Palm Springs features works of varying disciplines, from painting to photography, and honours the location’s mid-century modern style and isolation.<\/p>\n
“This vibrant and inspiring exhibition will take visitors on an excursion through the great Australian dream, providing insight and connection between America and Australia and post-war architectural imaginings,” Art Gallery of Ballarat director Louise Tegart said.<\/p>\n
Kate Ballis, Tom Blachford, Anna Carey, Sam Cranstoun, Paul Davies, Rosi Griffin, Vicki Stravrou, Robyn Sweaney and Gosia Wlodarczak are all Australian artists featured.<\/p>\n
Work by United States creatives Darren Bradley, Jim Isermann, Troy Kudlac, Lance O’Donnell and Kim Stringfellow is also included.<\/p>\n
Dr Greer Honeywill has curated the show, which has been created by Home of the Arts, Gold Coast in partnership with Museums and Galleries Queensland.<\/p>\n
Dr Honeywill is also an artist and writer who enjoyed the desert landscape of Palm Springs, and post-war architecture, upon visiting.<\/p>\n
“In an era of radical transformation, it is calming, inspiring, and reassuring to lose yourself in the art and architecture of a dream,” Dr Honeywill said.<\/p>\n
As part of the AGB’s Art Late series, OK Motels will be leading nights of live music, food and experiences, with a focus on Lost in Palm Springs, tomorrow (Saturday, May 11) as well as June 15 and July 13.<\/p>\n
“We’re excited to have our favourite curators of pop culture, OK Motels, taking over the Gallery to continue our popular Art Late series featuring great bands, a local Palm Springs-inspired menu, curated drinks and access to the entire Gallery after dark,” Ms Tegart said.<\/p>\n
“This is a late-night encounter and all immersive event that you will want to be a part of.”
