{"id":102465,"date":"2024-05-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=102465"},"modified":"2024-05-15T15:45:23","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T05:45:23","slug":"putting-their-stamp-on-things-for-120-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/putting-their-stamp-on-things-for-120-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Putting their stamp on things for 120 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat Philatelic Society has celebrated one hundred and twenty years since its first recorded meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Group members met at the Invermay Recreation Reserve to reminisce and share their passion for stamp collecting, with attendees traveling from Brighton, Warrnambool, Maryborough and Bendigo for the event.<\/p>\n<p>The club&#8217;s initial meeting was held in 1904, making it one of the oldest philatelic societies in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>President Pat Tracey said the longevity of the club is due to the passion of those involved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to have members who are committed, and we have about 25 very regular attendees at meetings,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/lifemembertonyreyntj_45801.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Life member Tony Reyntjes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;COVID was a real challenge, but we have done very well to stay together as that group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a common interest, that can be collections or friendships, and I believe that&#8217;s something we&#8217;re missing in our society today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Life member Keith Sanders began collecting stamps when he was eight years old, and he has been a part of the society for 42 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hadn&#8217;t actually been a member of any club but when I came to Ballarat there was an advert in the paper and I responded to it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/displays_46999.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The afternoon featured a range of displays of the club&#8217;s history and member&#8217;s collections.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some of us have been in the club for a very long time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite stamp collecting becoming less popular among younger generations, vice-president Cliff Matthews said the practice still holds value.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can learn a lot of social history, political history, geography and general history,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s all there in stamps.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat Philatelic Society has celebrated one hundred and twenty years since its first recorded meeting.
