{"id":103372,"date":"2024-06-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=103372"},"modified":"2024-06-05T20:05:21","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T10:05:21","slug":"dragon-boat-festival-for-unity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/dragon-boat-festival-for-unity\/","title":{"rendered":"Dragon boat festival for unity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Chinese Professionals Club of Australia and the Chinese Australian Cultural Society Ballarat are inviting the community to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival next weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The event on June 15 from 10.30am until 4pm at Durham Point, Lake Wendouree, will have a Dragon Boat paddling experience, entertainment, stalls, face painting and other activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The highlight is the Dragon Boat paddling experience where we have the Ballarat Dragon Boat Club and a couple of boats out on the lake,&#8221; Helina Guo, secretary for the Chinese Professionals Club of Australia, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People are welcome to get on the boat and have a paddle and people from the club will be teaching.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s teamwork, it&#8217;s fun and for a lot of people it will be the first time in their life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the event is to foster inclusivity, celebrate diversity and promote unity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/16_69833.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There will be entertainment which celebrates diversity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think sometimes education can be deemed boring but through fun activities we can spread the ideas and the stories,&#8221; Ms Guo said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Especially since Ballarat is a city where there is a lot of Chinese tradition and heritage so it is the perfect place to promote this festival.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday, and it gets rid of bad fortune and commemorates Qu Yuan, a poet and prime minister of the southern Chinese state of Chu during the Warring States period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a Chinese traditional festival that always falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese Calander,&#8221; said Ms Guo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Usually, May in Chinese Culture is deemed an unlucky time of the year, so the holiday is there to get rid of the bad fortune.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Chinese Professionals Club of Australia and the Chinese Australian Cultural Society Ballarat are inviting the community to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival next weekend.
