A TENDER is being advertised for management works at the former Black Hill Landfill site at Chisholm Street Reserve.<\/p>\n
The works comply with Environmental Protection Authority requirements and will include the installation of a landfill gas trench to intercept and vent potential landfill gas.<\/p>\n
Work will also be done to improve stormwater engineering controls to direct water, which ensures it drains from the landfill surface.<\/p>\n
The site, which was in operation from about 1967 to 1982, is managed by the City of Ballarat.<\/p>\n
The existing cap conformed with the EPA’s cap construction requirements of the 1980s and used clay-rich soil and a topsoil layer.<\/p>\n
The current tender complies with the Environment Protection Act 2017.<\/p>\n
The City of Ballarat conducts regular monitoring of the site which ensures that the risk of contamination is mitigated.<\/p>\n
Audits are also regularly carried out and the last one concluded that these works are required.<\/p>\n
City of Ballarat Director of Infrastructure and Environment, Bridget Wetherall, said the works will benefit the community and the environment.<\/p>\n
“It is important that we conduct the management works to comply with Environment Protection Authority guidelines while ensuring that the community and our environment is protected,” she said.<\/p>\n
The gas venting works will occur at the back of some houses of Leerama Court and these residents have been notified.<\/p>\n
The works are expected to begin in November 2024 and will be completed by June 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
