WHEN young netballer Embly Jenkins found out she would be representing Victoria during this year’s national championships, she was overcome with joy.<\/p>\n

“I was through the roof,” she said. “I was smiling and couldn’t believe it.<\/p>\n

“It’s very important to me because it’s my dream to become a netballer and reach a really high Australian medal.”<\/p>\n

Selected as one of a dozen girls in School Sport Victoria’s 12 and under state netball team, Embly is preparing to take part in the nationals in early September.<\/p>\n

But with participation costs at a minimum of $1000, the Jenkins family is seeking the support of the community with a fundraiser through the Australian Sports Foundation.<\/p>\n

Embly’s father Matt said financial backing from the public will be essential.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“It’s lots of travel to Melbourne, so it’ll be commuting there and back each week and obviously game practices, uniform presentations, and the carnival,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s been surprising to see the support so far. Netball is a community sport obviously, and the young kids are trying their best out there in the winter.<\/p>\n

“For Em to make the state team is amazing, and to have people reach into their own pocket and give something to help her live her dream is really good.”<\/p>\n

Embly’s competition schedule will entail three hours of<\/p>\n

training every Sunday at Parkville’s State Netball and Hockey Centre as well as game day simulations.<\/p>\n

Taking to netball at nine years old after watching her sister play, Embly currently balances her time outside of state team preparations between North Ballarat’s under 13 seniors, and the Geelong Flyers extended squad.<\/p>\n

Mr Jenkins previously represented Victoria in national basketball and football competitions and said Embly’s competing will add to the family’s proud sporting background.<\/p>\n

“To be able to add a netball dress to a basketball singlet and football jumper for the state of Victoria is really pleasing for our family,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Em’s always got a netball in her hand so to be able to have three state uniforms in the family is really nice.”<\/p>\n

The fundraiser will continue until the end of August, and can be found on the Australian Sports Foundation website.<\/p>\n
